about this museum
The
Museo Numismático de Guatemala, housed in the Banco de Guatemala building at Plaza Carlos Mérida in Zone 1 of Guatemala City, was inaugurated in July 2006 and offers free admission. It features over 3,000 artifacts displayed across seven galleries that trace the evolution of exchange - from Pre-Hispanic barter items like cacao and jade to Colonial-era Spanish coins and modern quetzal banknotes - and includes a secure vault showcasing 19th-century gold coins from the Rafael Carrera era. Photography is not permitted, but weekday guided tours provide deeper insight into Guatemala’s monetary heritage.
